How does the biological effluent treatment of wash water work?
Biological treatment takes the oil/water separator technology and adds the ability to further treat the effluent with aerobic and anaerobic microbes. After the effluent has passed through a retention phase(like the oil/water separator) to separate settable solids the effluent passes through a series of fixed film bioreactors for removal of water miscible long and short chain carbon organic contaminants. Fixed film bioreactors maintain the perfect environment for the colonization of microbes. These specially engineered microbes assimilate organic contaminants into carbon dioxide water and nitrogen. Reduction of the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in the effluent is achieved through microbial contaminant assimilation and continuous oxygenation of the waste stream.
