How does the amount of time between application and placement differ in domestic and international adoptions?
Although it varies from case to case, a general time frame in domestic adoptions is from 18 months to two years. In international adoptions, the amount of time usually ranges from six to 12 months from when a couple’s home study goes to a country and the country sends the couple information on a child. Q: How does the adoption expense differ in domestic and international placements? A: It’s hard to give specific information on domestic placements, since our program’s fees are determined on a sliding-scale income basis. Some of the countries (11 at present) we work with require a set fee that is not negotiable. But the ballpark range for an international adoption is between $15,000 and $20,000. Much of that figure reflects travel and lodging expenses. A domestic placement will nearly always cost half, or even less, than an international adoption.
