How does the amount of park space in the plan, especially planted areas, compare to the current amount?
The plan provides more park space than what exists currently. North of Van Buren Avenue, lawn will border the east side of the parking area. The area south from Van Buren to Madison (currently the site of two large parking lots) will be converted to lawn and plazas. Between Western and Washington, there will be a lawn and new seating area. To see details comparing current conditions to planned park improvements, go to Old & New. Hard surfaces will increase by .7 of an acre with construction of the riverfront improvements. This increase will come from construction of the new plazas and viewpoints, paved parking, and some road widening. Hard surfaces will consist of approximately 46 percent of the total project area, including First Street and the riverbank. Not including the riverbank, hard surfaces will amount to about 57 percent of the total area. For additional information and a comparison with existing conditions, go to Old vs. New.
