How does the $500 million Higher Education Bond Referendum that passed in 2000 fit into this campaign?

We are grateful to the voters of North Carolina for overwhelmingly approving the Higher Education Bond Referendum; however those funds were solicited to absorb the costs associated with projected enrollment growth at all universities in the 16-campus UNC system. The $21 million the School of Dentistry will receive through the bond referendum can be used for construction and renovation only. The $30 million we’re raising in the Carolina First Campaign are needed to help us retain and recruit excellent faculty members, provide scholarship and fellowship assistance for students, and to build and equip the new Oral Sciences Center.
