One of the major effects of rising temperature in the ocean is the reduction of the oxygen concentration in the water. Water dissolves more oxygen when it is colder. The rise in sea temperature due to global warming can have severe effects on the ocean by changing the underlying biochemistry from one that is based on oxygen to one that is anaerobic. This effect has been linked to most of the mass extinctions on earth.
