The active ingredient in Tear Stain Away is Tylosin tartrate. It is an over the counter antibiotic in the macrolide family, like Erythromycin. In the subclinical dosing of Tear Stain Away, it works, first to bind to serum Porphryns, reducing them in your pets tears, and secondly it reduces bacterial and yeast infections that contribute to excessive tearing and staining.
