There are three cell shapes: 1) Squamous cells – Flat cells. Fish scales. 2) Cuboidal cells – Cube shaped in cross section, common in ducts and glands. Kidney tubule 3) Columnar cells – Column/ rectangular shaped, common in mucus (exterior of the body) Then there are layers of cells: A) Simple epithelium – Consists of a single layer of cells. Found in body parts that have little wear and tear. Located where absorption, diffusion, filtration and secretion, are important functions. Mucous membranes – Reproductive, digestive, B) Stratified epithelium- Cells are stacked together and found where you do have a high degree of wear and tear.
