How does Stephen Kings story “The Mist” differ from the movie?

The story ends with them leaving the store and driving into the Mist south towards Portland. They do see the 600ft creature but that is about it. In the novella the main character does not kill everyone and the Army does not appear at all. The book ends with you not knowing what will happen. Personally I loved the ending of the movie better.
