How does static friction work?

0

It’s sort of hard to explain without drawing it. Obviously, objects are very rough at the microscopic level, and that causes friction, but static friction supplemented by electrostatic bonds between molecules of the objects. The molecules on the bottom of one object form loose bonds to the molecules on the top of the other object, and to move, these bonds must be broken. Once the object is moving, however, these bonds cannot be formed, so it is not an issue with kinetic friction.
