Because these are different products – one is a database server, the other is a cloud service – the two products cannot be compared based on price. SQL Server is purchased via a software license. In contrast, SQL Azure is a cloud service whose pricing reflects costs associated with server hardware, software, network bandwidth, storage and the management of the hardware running SQL Azure.
