How does Sound Travel Through Water?
Answer Hi Caroline, Both sound and light travel through water. But due to the higher density of water (vs. air) light waves get refrated more quickly and the light disipates more quickly. Sound on the other hand can travel great distances through water and experiments with sonar has shown that it can travel for many miles underwater where in the air, sound disipates more quickly for lack of air density.. Whale songs can be heard for very long ways too, and it may be how mates find each other.
