How does soil compaction compare for different OMNITRAC systems vs. standard tractor tires?
Axle load determines the extent of compaction damage. A typical four-wheel drive tractor will have axle loads of 15,000 pounds or more. With the use of tracks, these axle loads can be distributed over a much larger surface. For example, dual 18.4 x 42 tires will generate a footprint of approximately 1,296 square inches of surface on the ground. An OMNITRAC Half-Track system with 24″ track will provide 2,960 square inches of surface on the ground. If 30″ tracks are used which is still less width than dual 18.4 x 42 tires, the track will provide 3,660 square inches of track on the ground. The OMNITRAC Half-Track system also provides for variable ground pressure control, eliminating the front wheel compaction; plus, the tracks are not constantly climbing out of a hole as it is with tires. A tractor equipped with 18.4 x 42 duals and axle weight of 15,000 pounds generates 11.6 pounds per square inch of ground pressure. However, an OMNITRAC equipped tractor using 24″ track generates 5 pounds
