How Does Social Phobia Affect Children and Adolescents?
Shyness is not uncommon and many people have experienced some degree of shyness some or other time in their life. Shyness can be debilitating and in extreme forms can result in social phobia which is one of the most common mental disorders worldwide. Shyness can be a variant of personality for some people and for others can be a disorder that affects their daily lives. In situations where shyness affects one’s life these people will refuse to enter into any new situations or eat in front of other people and many avoid having conversations and these are candidates that experience social phobia. Statistics have shown that one in every eight people develop social phobia and that these subjects have a physical outbreak of physical symptoms such as anxiety attacks, dry mouth, having difficulty in swallowing, increased heart rate, sweaty palms, hesitant speech and an urge to escape their situation.
