I don’t believe that it can be said that the book improved the world at large, unless it’s from learning a lesson about the fact that having love is better than having money. It teaches the consequences of wrong actions, and the truth about what is important. If you mean, how does he improve HIS world: it’s that he allows a little girl into his life and from there allows love to come in and bring the solace and peace he so sorely needed. Remember that he started out rather innocent and trusting and was very cruelly betrayed by his best friend (and the woman he loved, too, though hers was not the most grievous offense). From there, after he left the only place he’d ever known, he becomes a loner and lives his life as though his work and the hoarding of money are the only things important.
