The specified period array serves several functions; however, its primary purpose is to provide a numerical grid upon which to evaluate irregular wave spectral integrations. Requested irregular wave spectra are represented internally in such a way that a wave probe stationary with respect to the vessel would “see” the requested spectral properties, including peak period, significant height and wave energy frequency distribution. In this sense, the period array can be considered “vessel-centric” (as opposed to “fluid-centric”). This “vessel-centric” consideration also applies to other wave periods, such as swell significant period.
