How does SAI Platform cooperate with other private initiatives, e.g. the retailers initiative GLOBALGAP?
The food industry has a key position between farmers and consumers, requiring a specific initiative aiming, on the one hand, to ensure that there is a supply of agricultural products and, on the other hand, that consumers’ needs are met. SAI Platform is open to collaboration with other initiatives which have similar interests, so as to avoid duplication of work as well as to help harmonize production guidelines. Thus, it has regular contacts with the retailer initiative for food safety and sustainable agriculture GLOBALGAP.There are, however, differences between both initiatives. GLOBALGAP focuses on implementing a number of minimum requirements via a certification process. SAI Platform goes a step further. It aims at developing, together with farmers and other stakeholders, good agriculture practices based on the economic, environmental and social pillars of sustainability, through a continuous process of improvement.
