How does rural road numbering work along freeways, highways and other major roads that pass through two or more municipalities?
Victoria’s highways have been broken down into segments of 99.99km or less. Numbers are allocated according to the distance of the property from the start of its segment’s datum point. When a segment ends, the numbering restarts using the next datum point as its origin. The segment length allows addresses of up to four digits (numerals) which was the national standard of the day. The segments are shown on the official “State Highways Segmentation and Addressing Directions map”. The map identifies the datum points and the direction of numbering for each segment. The map was developed in the 1990s to assist councils in coordinating the numbering direction and sequences between municipalities. For other roads not depicted on this map that straddle municipalities, Council’s will negotiate the numbering direction with their neighbouring Council.
