The Bujinkan relies on a ranking system based upon patches and starts worn over the heart on ones gi top (training clothes). The patches and stars correspond to a system of Kyu and Dan levels which increase from 9 th Kyu – 1 st Kyu, then 1 st Dan – 10 th Dan (there are 5 levels of 10 th Dan).
