How does RAID work for SATA hard drives?
in order to run hard drives in a RAID volume you need to have two drives of the same size. If you get two different size drives, its only going to show up as the size of the smallest drive. In your case you would need another 160 gig. RAID 0 and 1 are the most common and the ones that you would probably use. RAID 0 is data stripping. It combines your two hard drives as one large drive and it is the fastest RAID available. RAID 1 is data mirroring. It automatically makes a copy of all your data from your main drive onto the backup drive. RAID 0+1 is data stirpping plus mirroring. You get the fast data stripping but also data mirroring so if your first two 160s go, you have all your data on the second two. As mentioned before, you do not have to install the SATA drives on a RAID volume. You can just install it as a regular single drive.
