How does Putumayo decide what songs to include on their CDs?
Once we have decided on a theme, our in-house researcher and ethnomusicologist, Jacob Edgar, begins collecting material relating to the theme. In many cases, we have been collecting material on projects for years, visiting various countries and attending industry conferences to compile a large archive of potential songs. After Jacob’s initial selections are reduced to a semi-final round by Dan Storper, we invite everyone in the company to get together and give their opinions on the songs. Then final selections are made and the rights secured.
