How does Psychological trauma from childhood affect functioning in adult life?
I’m not sure what kind of trauma you experienced as a child, but I am a survivor of child sexual abuse and have been educated very well on this topic. I don’t think you necessarily have a mental disorder associated with your childhood trauma. Dissociative Identity Disorder is a very intense disorder with very severe and distinctive characteristics that you have not discribed here. Also, you could have a delayed onset of PTSD. Being “hyperalert” is one of the characteristics of PTSD. I think when anyone goes through trauma as a child, the coping mechanisms you developed and used as a child stick with you thorughout your life right into adulthood. Have you tried talking to a therapist that specializes in childhood trauma? I think this would be an excellent start for you, yet I know taking that first step is the most difficult.
