How does Portland Public Schools spend its money?
More than half of Portland Public Schools’ $468 million general fund budget goes straight to the classroom, paying for teachers and their classroom materials. And almost one-fifth pays for other school staff, such as counselors, librarians, principals and school secretaries. Only 4 percent pays for administration. As PPS has confronted budget cuts, school boards and superintendents alike have focused on one thing: protecting schools and teaching positions. Employees at all levels have suggested changes to the way PPS does business.
