How does porcelain tile differ from ceramic tile?
Ceramic is actually a term used to cover a range of clay based products while porcelain is a specific type of ceramic. However, there are porcelain and non-porcelain ceramics. Porcelain is made from porcelain clay fired at an extremely high temperature. It is very strong and has a water absorption rate below 0.5%. The average PEI rating of porcelain is 5. Non-porcelain ceramic is made from red and white clay and is fired at a lower temperature. It is also not as durable or moisture resistant as porcelain and the average PEI range is 0-3.
