How does PHN present?
A5: PHN is a possible complication of shingles, caused by the Herpes zoster (chicken pox) virus.9 The virus can cause nerve damage. In some cases, this damage may lead to shooting, piercing, stabbing, or shock-like pain, persisting 3 or more months even after the rash has healed.9,10,11 This condition is called PHN. PHN is usually accompanied by skin hypersensitivity so severe it may make even the lightest touch or the feel of bedsheets painful.
