How Does Peroxide Work to Bleach Hair?
While hydrogen peroxide is an important ingredient in many hair-lightening products, using it alone doesn’t work to bleach hair very well. Because hydrogen has an acidic pH, it cannot act as a de-colorant without first being complemented with another more basic alkaline ingredient. This produces a chemical reaction that works to bleach the pigment in the hair strands.
