How does Peets keep its coffee fresh at a grocery store?
Coffee for our grocery distribution is machine-packaged shortly after roasting. The package is sealed, and a one-way valve is applied to permit “de-gassing” in the bag, which allows carbon dioxide formed during the roasting process to escape. Additionally, each package is “nitrogen-flushed” to eliminate residual oxygen in the package. We are pleased with the integrity of this package, which keeps our coffee tasting great. Each bag is labeled with a “best by” date that is exactly 90 days past the roast date to ensure only the freshest coffee will be available at shelf. We still only roast the coffee when it is ordered–even when the order is for grocery stores.
