How does Part D interact with State Pharmacy Assistance Programs (SPAPs)?
The Medicare Modernization Act allows State Pharmacy Assistance Programs to “wrap around” the Medicare benefit to fill gaps in coverage. Twenty-three states and the U.S. Virgin Islands offer State Pharmacy Assistance Programs (SPAPs) that can help pay your drug plan premiums and/or other drug costs. To find out about the benefits offered by the SPAP in your state, go to Medicare’s website at http://www.medicare.gov/spap.asp or contact your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) which has counselors that are available to provide free one-on-one help with your Medicare questions or problems.
