Dr. Springer: As a starting point, it is very important that the surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery which is the only board recognized by the American Medical Association and the American Hospital Association in Plastic Surgery. The surgeon should also be a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). This organization and the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) both require that the physician pass the plastic surgery boards. You should feel that your surgeon has spent enough time with you to understand your wants. You doctor should also be willing to show you before and after photos of his or her own work.
