How does one report the performance of both a screening mammogram on the right breast and a diagnostic on the left breast at the same encounter?
If a screening mammography is performed on the right breast and a diagnostic mammogram on the left breast, then it is appropriate to report 76092, 52,Screening mammography, bilateral (two view film study of each breast)and 76090,Mammography; unilateral. Please note that 76092 is inherently bilateral, therefore, modifier 52,Reduced Servicesis appended to identify performance of the procedure on only one breast. Third party payers may require appending of modifiers RT & LT in this situation.
