How does one readjust to life on land after such a long adventure?
The most difficult adjustment to make after so many years of “freedom” is to get used to all the red tape and bureaucracy. All the rules and restrictions in everyday life nearly took our breath away. A very high standard of living, accompanied by sky-high costs, was a shock for us who have been accustomed to bargaining and trading for such a long time. Not to mention the traffic! We were actually afraid to get behind the wheel again after all those years. We felt safer on the ocean than on Highway 401. It also took time to get used to being surrounded by so many people. All the attention and social activities, even being ever so very pleasant, became a tremendous change from the peaceful harbours and stillness out there. We were overwhelmed and tired easily. We were also surprised at how much we had missed in terms of news, at home as well as around the world. At sea, we did not keep up to date as well as we would have ashore.
