How does one measure the pulse of the antiques and collectibles market?

It is comprised of tens of thousands specialized collecting categories, each of which has a different pulse. Further, regions and sale venues have their own pulses. In addition to internal pulses, the antiques and collectibles market is subject to outside influences. Fashion and decorating pundits can trigger a collecting craze. An event or death of a famous personality creates a celebrity bounce. Consume confidence impacts the antiques and collectibles trade as much as it does other aspects of the economy. I was reminded of the above during a recent visit with Al and Susan Klein Bagdade in Chicago.
