How does one know when the seeds are ready for planting?
The seed pod that develops atop the bloom stalk will dry and the color will change from green to a papery brown. The sutures, or seams, of the pod will begin to open. Collect the black seeds dry on a paper towel for at least 24 hours. Lightly cover the seed with soil in a pot filled with a well-drained medium. The tiny, single leaves will begin to appear in two weeks. The germination is sporadic and will continue for four to six weeks. This is a survival mechanism for many seed varieties. The seeds may also be stored for a short time in a labeled paper envelope.
