How does one ensure greater yields in micromachining?
Albelo: Product yields are determined by a variety of methods. In microengineering applications in particular, the finish of the machining or modified surfaces is critical. One way we have enhanced yields is to focus on applications where we can replace the mechanical processes traditionally employed to create the feature or device. Convergence is complementary to our laser solutions, as it drives the geometries of the features of interest into domains that are singularly those of the laser. Utilizing laser processes in glass applications, for instance, enables higher yields by eliminating damages to edges, which reduces or eliminates, in some cases, the need for downstream polishing steps. In silicon via drilling we provide higher yields even over existing laser processes by delivering carefully controlled and conditioned flashes of light in precise duration, resulting in very repeatable holes with little or no discernable debris. The key is attention to process details on an applicat
