How does one become a piano tuner? What tools or training would I need?
I’ve been fully employed in the pipe organ business in and around Toronto for 25 years. Most of the work is tuning and I received no training, just learned by osmosis. At Western University in London, Ontario a piano tech. course was initiated a few years ago. Previously it had operated out of a tech. college in Toronto. I visited the university to have a look at a piano my church wanted to buy from the university when the course had just started. I felt more or less useless as I know nothing about pianos and avoid doing anything to them. I recall when there hearing in the background about twenty new piano tech. students working inside (more or less)sound proof rooms on their tuning temperaments..4ths and 5ths over and over again and again-just like the organ business, but there we usually require two people to tune.
