How does NMHPA affect prior authorization or pre-certification for a hospital stay in connection with childbirth?
A plan, insurance company or HMO cannot deny coverage for a 48 or 96 -hour stay if the covered mother or provider cannot show that the stay was medically necessary. However, the plan can require an employee to notify the plan of the pregnancy in advance of the delivery so that out-of-pocket costs are reduced.
