How does music software work with a windows computer using a regular keyboard?

Most music softwares have the ability to do what you describe on a regular keyboard. However, from personal experience, I would reccomend a USB Midi keyboard. It takes all the guesswork out of MIDI interfaces. There are even some combination regular/MIDI keyboards.
