How does MFI compare to light obscuration?
MFI has been compared to light obscuration in several studies and peer-reviewed publications. Visit our Technical Resources pages for more information. The size ranges of the two technologies are similar however MFI can operate with much higher concentrations. MFI also provides particle morphological information that is unavailable with light obscuration instruments. Another important distinction is measuring transparent particles. Within their respective specifications, both MFI and light obscuration deliver similar results using NIST-traceable polystyrene beads. However, MFI has been shown to detect and measure a substantially higher number of particles when the particles have a higher transparency. Protein-based particles or aggregates can be highly transparent which is one of the reasons MFI is widely used in the bio-pharmaceutical sector.
