How does Mars, Valles Marineris compare with Earths Grand Canyon?
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/56/Mars_Valles_Marineris.jpeg Valles Marineris is a network of canyons located just south of the Martian equator, the largest canyon in the Solar System. It cuts a wide swath across Mars. This grand valley extends more than 3.000 kilometers long (2.000 miles), spans 600 kilometers across (373 miles) on its wider section and 8 kilometers (5 miles) deep. By comparison, the Earth’s Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA, is 800 kilometers long (500 miles), spans 30 kilometers (18 miles) across and 1.8 kilometers (1 mile) deep. The Valles Marineris is formed out of several parallel, interconnecting troughs; it dwarfs Earth’s Grand Canyon by being wider, longer, deeper, and older. Geologists think the Valles Marineris began to open as geological faults about 3.5 billion years ago, whilst the Gran Canyon in Arizona was opened by the Colorado River erosion some 2 million years ago. The Valles Marineris system is so long, that if placed on earth, it would
