How does LNG ultimately benefit the people of North America?
LNG supplements North America’s natural gas supply. People use natural gas in their homes for cooking and to provide heat, air conditioning and hot water. It is an essential ingredient in producing fertilizer and many other important products. Natural gas is a critically important fuel in the generation of electric power. The North American natural gas market is expected to continue to grow while at the same time, North American natural domestic gas supplies are declining. Therefore, LNG is expected to play an increasing role in the future energy mix for North America. In Baja California, Mexico, demand for energy is expected to increase 3.5 percent annually between 2007-2017. LNG will be an important source of natural gas for that region. Additional supplies of natural gas in North America will place downward pressure on natural gas prices.
