How does liberalism and atheism get so confused in America?
Liberalism does not believe that there are any rights that are inherent. Rights come from law. Conservatism believes that there are (God-given) innate rights that every human has and no law can take them away. What is getting confused is conservatism and reactionim. A reactionist believes that society is zero sum and that the improvement of anyone elses lot must harm his. For this reason he opposes any government action taken to improve the lot of his fellow citizens. This is why they howl about their tax money being used by an overactive government. They honestly believe that the reduction in privilege is their lot in a zero-sum world and that any government that does not actively support the status quo of their privilege is actively harming them. Note that a reactionary is more liberal–he relies on the law to maintain his privilege and legal restrictions of his social inferiors.
