William Hemings, a childless Civil War veteran who was the son of Madison Hemings and grandson of Sally Hemings, is buried at Leavenworth National Cemetery in Kansas. He was the last male descendant of Hemings. The Hemings family would not give permission to have the body exhumed for DNA testing to show a direct lineage back to Jefferson.
