Approx. 25% of Japan is commercial and residential land. The remaining 75% is uninhabited mountainous forest. Virtually all Japanese live in the large metropolitan areas on the coast. They have learned to live in close proximity to each other and have limited personal space. The government is working to reduce the population to 100 million by 2050 and to 64 million by 2100. The interior of the island is mountainous, forested and unsuitable for residential use. The climate is temperate (nice). They do have to contend with earthquakes and tsunamis. An earthquake occurs about every 10 years or so. Tsunamis are tidal waves that result from earthquakes or plate shifts on the ocean floor. Japan has done a remarkable job reducing pollution since the 50’s and 60’s. Japan is a member of the Kyoto Protocol, a group of countries commited to reducing carbon emmisions worldwide.
