How does Israels government work?
Israel is much like the United States in that it is a democracy. However, Israel runs on a multiparty system instead of our two party system. What that means is that in the Knesset (equivalent to Congress) they have representatives from about 12 different political parties. The number of votes each party receives in the elections determines how many seats that party holds in the Knesset. The leader of the party with the most seats in the Knesset takes the position of Prime Minister. • Who was the first female Prime Minister? Golda Meir was the first female prime minister of Israel from 1969-1974. She was Israel’s fourth Prime Minister and led the country during the Yom Kippur War in 1973. Born in Ukraine, Meir’s family moved to the United States when she was a young girl, and Meir immigrated to Palestine in 1921. She was known for her diplomatic skills and strong personality .
