How does hypnosis lead people to find other personalities in them, and even create Multiple Personality Disorder?
Does it happen often? Hypnosis doesn’t “lead” people to find other personalities per se. In fact, MPD has been re-named to Dissociative Identity Disorder, since we are realizing that these are all parts of the same personality (the same person), but some kind of dissociated identity has emerged, malforming the person’s personality structure. Can hypnosis “create” another personality? Not really. Separate, dissociated identities are the products of acute mental illness, often caused by external (environmental) factors. Basically, you experience another personality because you’re a little bit sick, just like you might experience a hacking cough during the beginning stages of lung disease.
