How does Hula “Moon” blend creativity and fun with Hawaiian culture?
We looked at old films of hula from this era portrayed on the big screen and saw how they mimicked the hula. We used some of these movements in the catchy and fun hapa haole tunes featured. The use of video helps give the show its foundation; much of the material for the video we found in our own collection of artifacts. How would you describe the music, choreography and staging? What do you hope guests take with them when they leave? That it was fabulous! Since this was an era that put English words to music, the choreography is simple yet flashy in costuming, like the big-screen era. We are taking our audience back in time when sultry hula maidens graced stages and movie screens. The hula lamp is even more popular today as a concept that we brought to life on stage. I hope our guests experience how much we have to offer culturally through music and dance in Hawai’i, and how we have so much more to share, too. Tell us about the costumes used in the show.
