How does HIV infection in discordant couples affect sexual behaviour?

St. Mary’s Hospital, London, United Kingdom BACKGROUND: The year 2000 saw the largest annual number of newly diagnosed HIV infections in the UK. Understanding risk factors for unprotected sex in HIV sero-discordant couples is important to the planning of programs and interventions to reduce HIV transmission. A previously published study showed 45% of discordant couples reported unprotected vaginal or anal sex and only 39% reported consistent condom use. This study explores sexual relationships in discordant couples and identifies reasons for certain types of sexual behaviour. METHODS: 21 sero-discordant couples were recruited for an Immunology study. All couples had documented histories of sexual exposure to HIV, are in long-term sexually active relationships (> 3 years) and answered confidential questions regarding their current sexual practises. Couples were interview
