How does heron get its fish from garden ponds?
It normally will land next to the pond and walk or hop to the edeg – but it can land inside the pond. In order to save the fish, you first need to give them places to hide – so place some terra cotta drain pipes or pots on their sides on the bottom of the pond. Then you can make it hard for them to find the fish by adding special pond dyes – use the darkest blues or blacks only. You dilute the dye, then add a bit at a time until you have enough darkness so you cannot see the bottom of the pond but you can see the fish near the surface. This dye also restricts the growth of algae in the pond. It will not dye the fish, it just makes it hard to find them at the bottom for the Heron and you will not see the pots or the bottom of your pond so the pond seems deeper.
