A hearing aid is a device which is used to help people who have hearing difficulties to hear sounds better. A past device that was used was a funnel-like amplification cone , which called an ‘ear trumpet’ or ear horn’. Another device that was used was a desk that had an in-built amplifier, into which earphones and microphones could be plugged. These worked better than passive ear trumpets but were not portable. The most common style of hearing aid nowadays is a small electronic device that fits into the wearer’s ear. In the mid to late 20th century, hearing aids that were carried in pockets were replaced by a more inconspicuous sort of model in which small zinc-air batteries were placed into the inserted unit itself. Types of hearing aids include: Body worn aids – Body worn aids were the first type of hearing aid and are now rarely used due to developments in technology.
