How does Guatemala celebrate their holidays?
Easter features processions which just about every church will have at least one procession featuring a hand carried float featuring Christ positioned accordingly for the day (carrying the cross, in dead, risen). The floats, which are quite large and heavy and carried from the church, along a set path which have been covered with ‘carpets’ made from colored saw dust or flowers which are quite beautiful. Generally the men carrying the floats are dressed in purple garb and are led by incense barers and followed by a men playing funeral marches. Some of the processions feature a float featuring Mary and being carried by women and smaller floats being carried by children. The largest of these processions are in Guatemala city, though the ones in Antigua usually get more attention from tourists.
