This is a theoretical assumption developed by Dr R. Paul St Amand. He says that fibromyalgia is caused by some normal constituent of the body building up in excess in the cells of the body causing them to function marginally. (You can move but you have no energy; you can think, but not think straight). Guaifenesin (and the other meds of the same ilk that were used) acts on a small area of the kidneys, (not the liver, not the brain) causing them to excrete more of this substance. Paul St Amand believes this substance is phosphates. But the body also excretes more oxalates, calcium and perhaps other things no one has measured. St Amand says that when the blood levels of this substance (phosphates) start to rise, your symptoms are worse. Early on in fibro when the body could return the blood levels to normal by pushing more into the cells, one had some good days; feeling well coincides with normal blood levels of the phosphates.
